MUBI: Dear Virus

During the lockdown, independent cinemas in London were forced to close, severely impacting both their businesses and the surrounding communities like never before.

To support these struggling cinemas, MUBI launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide them with what they needed most: money—plain and simple. As part of this effort, the idea proposed was renting the marquees of some of London’s most iconic independent cinemas and using them as outdoor signs to deliver a simple yet powerful message. This not only helped raise awareness but also provided additional financial support to the participating theatres: Genesis, Rio, Catford, Phoenix, and Electric—five of London's most renowned independent cinemas.

MUBI: Dear Virus Aftermath

The campaign was a success, attracting attention and support from cinema icons and personalities such as Ken Loach and Edgar Wright, among others. It raised nearly £30,000 to support independent cinemas across London.

To celebrate this milestone, we created a series of posters that challenged the original headline, reaffirming that the virus did not kill cinemas. These posters symbolized unity with independent cinemas while reinforcing MUBI’s curatorial approach. They were distributed and displayed across the five participating cinemas.
